From captivating performances to stunning set designs, Mary Persons theater department is bringing the stage to life with two exciting productions, each offering a completely unique experience.
The Wizard of Oz
The first show is the class’s One Act competition performance of the classic musical The Wizard of Oz. What sets this production apart from other shows is the added intensity of the competition format where each performance must stay under 55 minutes or the team risks losing points. On October 29th, the Mary Persons Fine Arts Center will host the One Act Competition, giving the cast and crew the advantage of performing on their home stage. It takes months of preparation to perfect the show, and as competition day approaches, the pressure rises.
“The week leading up to competition is stressful, but also really fun. Everyone is giving 110% because nobody wants to be the one to mess up,” said Juvita Tafor, a junior.
With all the hours of both in-class and after school rehearsal, the musical theater members are hopeful to bring home a first place win so the department can move forward to the state One Act competition.
12 Angry Jurors
The second production in the works, 12 Angry Jurors, shifts the mood entirely with a serious, thought-provoking courtroom drama. The play follows twelve jurors as they deliberate the fate of a 19-year-old defendant accused of murder. One juror, refusing to rush to judgment, gradually leads the group to reconsider their initial verdict, exposing holes in the case along the way.
To create a unique experience, audience members will be able to enjoy their own picnic meal brought to the show. For the first time, a theatre event will be held in the brand new freshman campus cafeteria for this dinner and show combination. The show will feature a 1950s-inspired theme, using costumes and props that the department already had available to bring the era to life.
“My freshman year, I took Theater Fundamentals, which sparked my love for theater and inspired me to keep taking these classes. I’m really excited to bring a childhood favorite to the stage,” says Maggie Crumbley, a sophomore. All ticket proceeds will go towards funding future productions, especially our spring show, which remains a secret until November.
From the high energy competition of The Wizard of Oz to the thought provoking drama of 12 Angry Jurors, this season highlights the dedication and wide range of talent of the Mary Persons theatre department. An unforgettable experience is promised for every audience member in attendance of the shows!
