Kayaks decorated with glow sticks during a full moon float with OOE.

The full moon holds deep cultural and spiritual significance across the globe. In India, it is celebrated as Purnima, a time for spiritual renewal and rituals. In China, the Mid-Autumn Festival honors the full moon as a symbol of unity and abundance. Native American tribes often view it as a time for healing and renewal. Across many traditions, the full moon is seen as a moment to connect with nature, reflect, and celebrate life’s cycles.

There are many opportunities to view the full moon but one that is especially enticing! The Ocmulgee Outdoor Exhibitions (OOE) headquartered in Macon offers monthly full moon expeditions on their guided kayak/canoe evening outings on the Ocmulgee River from Hwy 83 bridge to Juliette, GA. Perhaps you have crossed paths with a fleet of kayaks decorated with glow sticks carrying 50-100 full moon floaters making the 2+hour journey.

The Ocmulgee (Hitchiti for “bubbling water”) River is over 255 miles long and provides a very serene waterway for Full Moon Floats where a highly trained team attends to the training, needs and safety of novice and seasoned paddlers. OOE was founded by Kathleen O’Neal in 2016 with the desire to help people connect with nature. The motto of

“Canoes, Kayaks, and Inner Peace” that she created has been fully embraced by current owners David Green and Adam Heagy and their Operations Manager, Madison Green.

Kayaking in the moonlight.

Participants’ have expressed enjoying the experience of the Full Moon Floats saying things like

“We had such a fun experience! This was our boys first kayaking trip, and the team at OOE made it so memorable. We simply showed up, and they took care of the rest!”

Another participant expressed that it was their first time kayaking adding

“I was a little nervous. The guides made sure I was super comfortable in my boat before setting me loose. They answered my questions and were super helpful. We had a blast! Looking forward to another trip!”

Paddling to Inner Peace through nature’s grace! What a refreshing way to enjoy the full moon.

OOE welcomes volunteers with all skill levels, and they are hiring shuttle drivers and river guides!  Their website details other standard and customized opportunities for nature adventure including the Okefenokee with 3-night expeditions with Madison’s acclaimed gourmet cooking!
