Every Month we want to shine a spotlight on a local small business in Monroe County. With so many great businesses to choose from, we want to ensure fairness and objectivity in selecting the ones to highlight. To accomplish this, we’ve created a set of criteria that will guide our choices.
We believe that the businesses most deserving of the spotlight are those that have a positive impact on the Monroe County community.
This impact can take many forms including:
Charitable giving and fundraising: Donating to or participating in fundraising events for charitable causes.
Volunteering and Employee Engagement: Encouraging employees to volunteer at local schools, shelters, or on environmental projects, as well as providing free services to under-served communities.
Supporting Local Artists or Cultural Events: This includes offering space for artists to display their work or sponsoring community events that focus on art and culture.
Environmental Sustainability and Green Initiatives: Adopting sustainable practices, such as reducing waste, using renewable energy, or offering eco-friendly products and services. Supporting local sustainability initiatives is also a key factor.
Creating Jobs and Economic Impact: Providing stable jobs with fair wages and benefits to local residents and supporting other small businesses through partnerships or startup assistance.
Promoting Diversity and Inclusion: This includes supporting programs for underrepresented groups and fostering inclusive environments.
Community Education and Outreach: Offering workshops or seminars on important topics like financial literacy, career development, and health and wellness. We also look for businesses that offer internships or partner with schools to provide extra educational opportunities.
Emergency Response and Crisis Support: Donating goods or services during times of crisis and supporting first responders.
Local Business Collaboration: Partnering with other businesses for joint promotions or events that benefit the local economy. Prioritizing local suppliers and manufacturers also keeps money circulating within the community.
Mentoring and Community Leadership: Taking leadership roles in local organizations (such as the Chamber of Commerce, city boards, or non-profits) or offering mentorship to aspiring entrepreneurs and individuals looking to start their own businesses.
These are the types of qualities we’ll be looking for when selecting businesses for future Local Business Spotlight articles.
We need your help to find these businesses! If you own, work for, or know of a business that has positively impacted the Monroe County community, please reach out to me at [email protected] to tell me about it.
